Is Fear Holding You Back?

Change is inevitable; but, to get what we really want takes vision and drive. Vision serves as a source of motivation and allows us to tackle obstacles. Drive is what propels people across the finish line; why they don’t give up.

Vision, is where many people get stuck and sometimes begin to spin in circles around the same decision or issue. Fear impairs vision because what we imagine for our future has a huge influence on us in the present.

No one ever says “I’m scared to get what I want” or “I’m afraid of reaching my goals”. But the underlying obstacle for many people not achieving their goals is fear.

Is this you?

  • You talk about what you are going to do more than what you actually do.
  • You work furiously on several projects at once, not focusing deeply on any of them and often not completing goals.
  • You second-guess yourself often.
  • You think your work is never quite good enough.
  • You’re on the verge of ‘success’ and things start going wrong.

When we change, the relationships around us change and the way we see ourselves is different. Success by its very nature means having or are experiencing something different. Something we didn’t have before.

The catch is that someone might really want change, but it could also scare them into paralysis!

Imagine being overweight your whole life. What will it feel like to be slim for the first time? How will you dress? What will being intimate be like? Who will you hang out with? Who are you if not the overweight person?

When someone gets caught up in what they don’t know instead of focusing on the vision she feels powerless. Lao-tzu said the biggest stumbling block to happiness is that people experience themselves as powerless, giving rise to the enemy of power: Fear.

Diagnose fear of success by asking yourself:

  • What do I have to give up in order to realize my vision?
  • What do I get to avoid if I don’t change?
  • What guarantee am I holding out for?
  • What am I afraid of losing if I succeed?

So, what is the secret to accessing personal power? How does one overcome fear and doubt to triumph?

Bravery. The ability to see and move directly through fear rather than trying to avoid or sidestep it is the true mark of personal power. This is the warrior’s path. Courageously and continuously facing fear clears the way to achieving one’s heart’s desire.

3 Steps for Facing Fear:

  • Develop a mindfulness practice (ie. meditation, breathing exercises, free form writing, yoga, etc ) to see the present.
  • Visualize your future using tools like journaling or creating a vision board.
  • Create a support system for your journey. Who can you recruit to be on your team? To hold you accountable for your goals? To stand by you while you change?

And what’s the damage? A smaller life. Perhaps feeling limited in your career, where or whether you can get educated, even who you can date, marry and love. The damage may spread to your bank account, your health and fitness and even how you carry yourself in the world.

But here’s the good news… it’s never too late to break out of an internal prison. The fact is, your life is yours to create. As long as you are willing to investigate and confront what’s living in the unconscious you are truly free to have what you dream.
